KopiaLens vs Replicaro

Replicaro is a free, open-source backup app that wraps the restic and Kopia engines in a simple interface, with its own file history, schedules and cloud vaults. KopiaLens runs on the same Kopia engine and adds the view inside: the real size of every folder, search across every snapshot, and cleanup inside old backups.

What KopiaLens adds

  • See inside the vault. Per-folder physical size after deduplication, reclaimable space, churn and retention simulation. Replicaro shows your backup history, not what each folder costs.
  • Search every snapshot. One search across every version of every file, not only the file history of one path.
  • Guided removal (Pro). Take a file or folder out of every snapshot that holds it, with a preview of the space you will get back, instead of shaping history only by retention.
  • What isn't backed up. Folders on your disks that no backup covers.

What Replicaro does well

  • Simple and free. Built to be approachable: pick folders, choose a vault, set a schedule. Free and open source.
  • A real file history. Search backups by file name, browse like a folder tree, compare versions, and restore any of them.
  • Lots of destinations. Local and network folders, SFTP, WebDAV, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Azure Blob, Google Cloud, S3-compatible storage (S3, Wasabi, B2, R2, MinIO), cold and archive storage, and any rclone remote.
  • Proven engines under the hood. restic and Kopia, both selectable per vault, with end-to-end encryption and object-lock support against ransomware.
  • Active development. Six releases in its first weeks (v1.0.6 by October 2026), a Docker image, and desktop notifications on every platform.

Who should pick which

Pick Replicaro if you want one clean front end for restic or Kopia, its file-history view, or managed destinations like Dropbox and Google Drive without configuring a bucket. It can also adopt a restic or Kopia repository you already have, data left in place.

Pick KopiaLens when the problem is the size of your backups: which folder is responsible, what would free space, finding any version of any file, and taking junk out of old snapshots with a preview.

Switching

If your Replicaro vault runs on Kopia, KopiaLens can open it. Replicaro changes Kopia policies when it connects, so try KopiaLens on a copy first, and never run both apps' backups on the same repository at once. Otherwise, start a new Kopia repository in KopiaLens and keep Replicaro for the old history until it expires.

The backup app is free. Pro, for cleanup, costs $20 a year or $50 lifetime at launch pricing. Download KopiaLens or see the plans.
